African American Poetry is the Heart and Soul of Black expression

African American poetry is used to express all of the issues in the community.  African American poetry can be often be seen and heard at places that feature open microphones where poetry artists display their talents.  African American poetry is my favorite type of poetry because it relates to the current issues that I face everyday.  African American poetry is even found in rap music and can even be used for writing rhythm and blues.   African American poetry expresses the pain that is found in most of the black communities.

In my book The Marks Left Behind, the expression of African American poetry is used to communicate the problems that we faced in the past and those we face now in the present. In my book The Marks Left Behind, I used real life experiences to create short stories.  If you have never read African American poetry, The Marks Left Behind is a great start.  It is a very powerful and emotional book that will take you on a ride into the very heart of the African American Community and put you face to face with the realities of current Black struggles.  I started writing African American poetry after a friend of mine was killed nearly twenty years ago coming out of a night club where he had been in an argument.  He decided that the best thing to do was to walk away.  I was devastated by his death and started writing African American poetry to express the things in life that really touched my heart.

Perhaps now you can see how African American poetry is the heart and soul of Black expression and will continue to be used as one of the greatest forms of African American expression.
